ONSTREAM MEDIA PLAYS CRITICAL ROLE IN 2005 BLOCKBUSTER FILMS
From Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media's 'The Chronicles of Narnia' to Universal Pictures' 'King Kong' — Major Motion Picture Studios Rely on Onstream Media's Technology
POMPANO BEACH, FL – JANUARY 23, 2006 – Onstream Media Corporation ( OTC: ONSM), a leading online service provider of live and on-demand, digital media communications and applications, proudly announced that its Entertainment Digital Network subsidiary (EDNet) was again instrumental in helping major motion picture studios meet critical deadlines for the release of blockbuster movies including King Kong and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.. Using EDNet’s technology, Walt Disney Pictures & Walden Media and Universal Pictures were able to expedite the process of finalizing and distributing the movies for the busy holiday movie season and for Academy Award consideration.
EDNet serves the entertainment industries with global connectivity for production and post-production facilities, music labels, producers, directors, and talent. Major motion picture studios use EDNet’s long distance connections to facilitate remote Automatic Dialog Replacement (ADR), the re-recording of dialog during post-production after the principal photography has been completed. Before EDNet, actors who were on location shooting their next film would often have to be flown back to New York or Hollywood to be re-recorded. Using some of EDNet’s technology, the actor can contribute a new performance from practically anywhere on the globe over synchronized digital high fidelity connections.
During the last months of post-production for The Chronicles of Narnia, the production team at Paravel Productions enlisted EDNet to provide them with long distance supervision tools as their completion dates drew near. With time growing short, and hundreds of visual effects shots pouring in, director Andrew Adamson and editor Sim Evan-Jones needed to be within driving distance of the visual effects vendors in Los Angeles. EDNet provided connections and equipment to synchronize their AVID editor in Hollywood to the ADR sessions originating from Goldcrest Post Production in London, so director and editor could coach the actors without having to leave the editing room.
“EDNET was very knowledgeable and helpful during our post production process. The low cost of EDNet’s communications gear was a breath of fresh air for our budget and schedule,” said Jonas Thaler, Post Production Supervisor, The Chronicles of Narnia. “Additionally, the installation of EDNet was quick and minimally invasive.”
Supervising music recording is another popular application of the EDNet technology with film and television studios. With King Kong, a composer change at the eleventh hour meant that Director, Peter Jackson in New Zealand, Composer, James Newton Howard (Composer) in Santa Monica, and a host of Hollywood scoring stages needed to ensure their work was done on time. With the EDNet equipment for synchronized audio and video transmission, Universal Studios was able to connect all the players for the scoring of King Kong. It was important to Peter Jackson and James Newton Howard to have a means of reviewing the scoring sessions together live with high quality audio, and just as important to be able to continue with their individual composing and editing tasks.
“Travel was not an option,” said Stuart Thomas, Technical Assistant, James Newton Howard. “There was just too much work to do in a short period of time and too little time to do it. We required a quick and reliable way to connect all the major players together in real-time.”
“Our goal with EDNet is to simplify the lives of talented artists during stressful crunch periods,” said Tom Scott, Vice President of Technology, EDNet. “When films such as these come out and are a huge success it makes our work that much more rewarding.
EDNet employs encoding and decoding equipment from several manufacturers together with their digital connections to provide bi-directional multi-channel high quality audio and video connections. Popular choices for ADR and Motion Picture Scoring are the DolbyFax from Dolby Laboratories in San Francisco, and the Worldnet Milano, from Audio Processing Technology of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Not coincidentally, EDNet is the exclusive North American distributor for both product lines.
